Redline — Text Diff & Restore for Jira

Support & documentation

Last updated: 1 November 2026

Redline adds a Text history tab to the Activity section of every Jira issue. It shows how the Description and multi-line text (paragraph) custom fields changed, word by word, and lets you put an earlier version back.

Using Redline

  1. Open an issue, go to Activity and choose Text history.
  2. The table lists every version: who changed it, when, and how many words were added or removed.
  3. Diff shows the change against the previous version. Use Compare to pick any two versions and switch between Unified and Side by side. Turn on Show markup to see the raw Jira wiki markup.
  4. Copy opens a version as readable text (or as wiki markup) so you can copy it.
  5. Restore writes a version back into the field after you confirm. It runs as you, so it only works if you can edit the issue, and Jira records it in the issue history like any other edit, so it can be undone.

What restore keeps, and what it cannot

Jira stores old versions of these fields as wiki markup. Redline writes that markup back and Jira turns it into rich text again, so headings, bold and italic, links, inline code, code blocks, bullet and numbered lists, tables, quotes and panels come back. Some elements have no wiki form and were already flattened by Jira when it saved the history: status lozenges, dates, action items (checkboxes), expand sections, macros, and emoji (kept as plain characters). Mentions are restored as mentions (Jira may notify people again), and images come back only if the attachment still exists. Redline warns you about these before you confirm.
